Fall Lawn Care Checklist for Knox & Plymouth, IN

7 essential tasks — in the right order — so your lawn comes back thick, green, and weed-free next spring. Free PDF download.

The 7 Tasks at a Glance

  1. Clear the Leaves — Don't Let Them Mat — Weekly through October & early November. Wet leaves block light, trap moisture, and invite snow mold.
  2. Final Mow — Cut Lower, But Don't Scalp — Late Oct to early Nov. Drop deck one notch (2.5–3") for the last cuts; reduces matting and vole damage.
  3. Aerate — Relieve Compaction Before Winter — Mid-Sept through mid-Oct (ideal). Core aeration lets air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone.
  4. Overseed — Fill Thin Spots While Soil Is Warm — Immediately after aerating, by Oct 15. Broadcast fescue/bluegrass blend into aeration holes for best contact.
  5. Fertilize — The Most Important Feeding of the Year — Late Oct to early Nov (after final mow). Slow-release winterizer (20-0-10) builds root reserves for spring green-up.
  6. Treat Broadleaf Weeds — Last Chance Before Dormancy — Mid-Sept through mid-Oct. Spot-spray dandelions, clover, plantain; chemical rides down to the root.
  7. Winterize Equipment & Irrigation — Protect Your Investment — Before first hard freeze (early-mid Nov). Blow out sprinklers, stabilize fuel, sharpen blades, store hoses.

Timing is specific to Starke & Marshall counties, IN (Zone 5b/6a). Adjust by 1–2 weeks for your exact location.

Why This Order Matters

Leaves first

Clearing leaves weekly prevents the mat that kills grass and breeds fungus. Everything else works better on a clean surface.

Aerate before overseeding

The holes from aeration give seed-to-soil contact — the single biggest factor in germination success. Doing them together saves a pass.

Fertilize last

Winterizer goes down after the final mow so nutrients go to root storage, not top growth. That stored energy = fast green-up in March.

Weed control before freeze

Fall weeds are moving energy to roots — herbicide rides that same path. Spring apps fight top growth; fall apps hit the root.
